Spending a month in Queensland with my friend was an adventure I’ll never forget. From dodging cyclones in Cairns to cuddling a koala on Christmas, every stop had its own vibe, and there’s so much I can’t wait to share in detail. For now, here’s a quick breakdown of our trip through Cairns, Mission Beach, Airlie Beach, Brisbane, and the Gold Coast.
Cairns: Cyclone Season and Unexpected Bonding
Our trip started with a bang—or rather, a cyclone. As soon as we arrived in Cairns, the weather turned against us. Our hostel warned us about potential power outages and told us to stock up on groceries and water. We braced ourselves for a chaotic start, but the storm ended up giving us some unexpected downtime.
With most outdoor activities off the table, my friend and I bonded with our roommates over a 1,000-piece Harry Potter puzzle. It’s funny how something so simple made those rainy days fly by. After chatting with other travellers, we decided to cancel our flight to Airlie Beach and book a Greyhound coach bus to Mission Beach, where the weather (hopefully) looked a little friendlier.
Mission Beach: Rainy Days with a Unique Treat
The rain followed us to Mission Beach, but it wasn’t nearly as bad as Cairns. We decided to ‘treat ourselves’ a little and stay at a motel with a lovely public pool—what a change from the hostel life!
The motel had a free shuttle service that dropped us off in a cozy area filled with restaurants and bars. We wandered along the beach during a rare sunny moment, then spent the evening bar-hopping. One of the highlights? Trying crocodile spring rolls at a local restaurant. I’ll admit, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but they were surprisingly delicious—definitely worth writing about in more detail later!
The night ended with complimentary hot chocolate by the pool, where we relaxed before gearing up for the long bus ride to Airlie Beach.
Airlie Beach: Whitsundays Wonder
Out of the whole trip, Airlie Beach stole my heart. This was, without a doubt, my favorite stop of the trip. The vibe here was unmatched, and it was packed with experiences I’ll never forget (and will definitely dive into later on the blog).
- Skydiving: I did it! Jumping out of a plane was both terrifying and exhilarating. The views of the Whitsundays from above were out of this world.
- Birthday Shopping Spree: What better way to celebrate than with some retail therapy?
- Sunset Cruise (Sort Of): We spontaneously booked a sunset cruise, but the sun had other plans. Even without the picture-perfect sunset, the experience was still magical.
- Karaoke and Bar Hopping: Airlie’s nightlife is on another level. We started at a karaoke bar, got a little (okay, a lot) tipsy, and followed the crowd to different venues.
- Siska Whitsundays Cruise: This 2-day, 1-night boat trip was the highlight of my Airlie experience. Snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef and walking along Whitehaven Beach felt like stepping into a dream.
Brisbane: Big City Break
Brisbane offered a refreshing change of pace from the tropical and coastal vibes we’d experienced earlier. The city had a more relaxed, urban feel, giving us the chance to slow down and explore. Visiting during the Christmas season was especially magical—we got to see King George Square come alive with holiday spirit. From dazzling lights to little kids performing festive dances, the atmosphere was heartwarming and filled us with excitement for the Christmas season ahead.
Gold Coast: Christmas by the Beach
Our last stop was the Gold Coast, where we met up with another friend. The rain tried to ruin our plans again, but we got lucky with some sunny breaks just when we needed them.
- Christmas on the Beach: We spent Christmas Day soaking up the sun, swimming, and just enjoying the simplicity of being by the ocean.
- Wildlife Sanctuary: One of the cutest moments of the trip was cuddling a koala and learning about Australia’s unique wildlife.
The Gold Coast was the perfect way to wrap up our Queensland adventure. It gave me a mix of beach days, wildlife encounters, and holiday vibes that felt like the cherry on top of the trip.
Back to Sydney: A New Story to Tell
After the Gold Coast, we headed back to Sydney to celebrate my birthday and New Year’s Eve. But that’s a story for another blog post, so stay tuned for more!
More Stories to Come
There’s so much I skimmed over in this post, but don’t worry—some of these moments deserve their own detailed spotlight. I’ll be writing about skydiving in Airlie, the Siska boat cruise, and yes, even the crocodile spring rolls in separate posts soon.
Queensland was a whirlwind of adventure, and I’m so excited to share more of the little details with you. For now, I hope this summary gives you a taste of what our month-long trip was like. Let me know if there’s anything specific you want me to dive into—I’d love to hear your thoughts!
Tips for Planning Your Queensland Adventure
- Be Flexible: Weather can be unpredictable (hello, cyclones!), so have a backup plan and stay adaptable.
- Transport: The Greyhound coach bus was a lifesaver for getting around without a car, but here’s a tip I wish I’d known earlier: look into Premier coach buses. A roommate at the hostel in Cairns mentioned it, and when I did some quick research, I found that it was about 90% cheaper than what I paid for Greyhound! (I’ll write more on this in a separate post soon—it’s definitely something budget travelers should know.)
- Pack Smart: Bring rain gear and swimwear—you’ll need both!
- Must-Try Foods: Crocodile spring rolls are a bucket-list culinary experience.
This trip was filled with surprises, unforgettable adventures, and moments that brought me closer to my travel buddy. Queensland’s mix of natural beauty, thrilling activities, and cityscapes made it a destination I’ll never forget. Whether you’re chasing adrenaline or looking to relax, Queensland has it all!
