Animal Encounter Highlights
Chatting with a Cockatoo and Cuddling Wombats
We didn’t know much about Australian wildlife before our visit, so we were shocked to learn that cockatoos can actually talk! Spending time by where they were held was a surprise as they continuously greeted us with cheerful “Hello!”s. It was hilarious and unexpected, making us smile nonstop as we enjoyed the playful antics of these cheeky, talkative birds.
Gigi was super excited to visit Taralga Wildlife Park because she had seen so many reels about cuddling wombats and couldn’t wait for the chance. We made sure to arrive right when the park opened, roaming around while waiting for the wombats to be brought out. When the time came, we were introduced to Wilma, the adult wombat, and Karl, the baby wombat. Little Karl was so playful, and we even got to pet him and watch him scurry around.

When it was time to cuddle, we joined the queue for Wilma. We each got to hold her while a staff member showed us how to do it properly. At 20 kilograms, she was a bundle of fun! We even managed to take a cute family photo with her, making the experience truly unforgettable.

What made it even better was seeing how much smaller the crowd was compared to the koala encounter Gigi had in Queensland. It felt more relaxed and personal, and the wombats didn’t seem stressed at all during their interactions with guests. The staff were attentive, ensuring that everyone held the wombats properly and that the animals were comfortable. You can tell the park really cares about creating a positive experience for both visitors and animals.
*Gigi will be writing about her Koala encounter at the wildlife sanctuary in Queensland in more depth in another blog post, where she’ll share her full experience and discuss the ethical considerations of that kind of interaction*
Other Must-See Animals and Experiences
The fun didn’t stop with the cockatoo and wombats! Taralga Wildlife Park is full of amazing animals to meet. While we didn’t get a chance to see the rare white kangaroos or the quokkas during our visit, we heard they’re just as cute as everyone says, making them must-sees for anyone visiting the park and checking it off their Australia Wildlife bucket list.

There are also dingoes, wallabies, and five kinds of wallaby species to learn about. Upon paying for admission, you are given a cone of food to feed the animals, which makes the experience even more interactive and fun. Feeding the animals was a big highlight, especially when the big emus and wallabies came up to us for treats. Kids and adults both loved it!
